Cass Sunstein has been nominated for the job of Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget.  On September 9, 2009, the Senate invoked cloture on his nomination, by a vote of 63 to 35.  The votes were divided pretty much across party lines, with all of the Democrats voting yay, plus 6 Republicans, to make the total of 63 yay.  The nay votes were comprised of 35 Republican votes.

Nudging you in the near future

The required majority to pass the cloture was 3/5, which was achieved by the Democrats seeking to pass the cloture.  One aspect that 2nd Ammendment supporters question is the fact that Mr. Sunstein does not believe in hunting and actually is in favor of an outright ban, because of his beliefs in animal rights.  Mr. Sunstein was even quoted saying, “we might ban hunting altogether, at least if it’s sole purpose is human recreation”.  Another suggestion that Mr. Sunstein has been credited with is the idea of “nudges”.  “Nudges” would be a type of disclaimer that would detail all of the possible horrible consequences that could result from the bad decision making skills of an individual.  To “nudge” the individual in the direction of a good “logical” decision, a credit card company, would have to disclose and detail all of the possible adverse consequences that might result in opening credit card accounts in the first place.  Another example of a “nudge” would be to a potential car buyer.  A regular car would have to disclose all of the possible gas costs that an individual might incur.  Nice to know that our Senate is “nudging” our country in the right direction.
