If you are considering the carrying of a concealed handgun, be sure to understand that you are in a position to do one of two things: create a positive example of a law-abiding gun owner, or provide more fodder for the relentless attack on gun rights by the liberal media. The best way to be the former is to simply follow some common sense, and you should be good to go.
For starters, verify that your state permits the carrying of a concealed handgun, and make sure you take any required courses to keep your permit valid. Also, double-check that your city or county does not have any restrictions on top of those of your state. Learn the restrictions of where you may carry your weapon, as some states do not allow them into certain locations.
Even though we hope that the situation never arises, be sure to know your states view of deadly force in the case of self defense. Regardless, your state of mind should be that using or even drawing your weapon should a last resort. Never allow an argument to cause you to reach for the gun, and try to avoid the places that you know would bring up a situation.
Think twice about using your weapon to defend another person, especially if he or she is a stranger. You may still be liable if you choose to protect that person through the force of the handgun. Finally, avoid alcohol, as it is illegal and impairs your judgement, which is never a good thing, more especially when carrying handgun.
