Right to bear arms

The case of the fatal shooting in Wisconsin, after a perpetrator invaded the home of the homeowner is a case that should be watched closely by those who believe in the 2nd ammendment.  While most people would agree that protecting the loved ones in your home is an honorable and noble gesture, those who are voraciously opposed to the 2nd ammendment may feel that it was not in fact an act of protecting those living in the house.  The liberal left wing mainstream media watching followers just love to practice what the rest of us know as fake compassion.

Wisconsin case

Wisconsin case

Instead of feeling something towards the person who was violated, in this case, the man who had his home invaded, and felt that he was in danger enough to have to pull the trigger on the perpetrator, these people who just can’t feel anything except fake compassion, turn on the victims, and feel fake compassion for the criminal.  Fake compassion is frequently used by those in the mainstream media.  Other examples are, the need to feel fake pity for those who perpetrated the crime on September 11, 2001.

Instead of being angry at the evil criminal masterminds who managed to kill many people, fake compassion is directed towards them for having the feelings they felt.  Anti gun sentiments are often a result of fake compassion, and unfortunately, there are many law makers and legislators who have fallen prey to the feelings of fake compassion.  Too bad fake is sufficient for situations when reality should be the focus.

Another day, another 3 bills to veto

October 11th is the last day that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger can veto 3 anti gun bills.  These anti gun bills, if passed, can cost the state of California millions in tax revenues, due to the loss of sales taxes because guns could no longer be sold.

New gun bills

New gun bills

The names of the thre bills proposed are:  AB 962, a bill requiring everyone who has ever bought a gun to be kept on a hand gun registry.  This bill would also ban sales of gun ammunition and reloading components to be sold on the internet or through mail order; SB 41, this bill requires more documentation and paperwork for firearms to sold to a particular buyer on the date of purchase.  The costs of the additional paperwork and documentaton would most likely be taken on by the potential buyer, providing more hardship and difficulties to a potential buyer; and the last bill is SB 585.  This bill is specifically targeted at gun shows.  If SB 585 passed, it would be unlawful for gun shows to be held at the Cow Palace, a venue in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Another consequence that would come to pass if the bill passed would be the precedent of gun shows being unlawful in the state of California.

So, if gun shows are unlawful in California, and guns being sold through legitimate vendors is full of many hassels and extraneous paperwork, the act of purchasing a gun lawfully would be viewed as not even worth doing.  Let’s hope these gun bills don’t pass.

Baggage check

One good thing that has come about is the vote allowing Amtrak passengers to check unloaded and locked handguns in checked baggage.  Senate Vote 279 passed with a final yay vote tally of all 40 Republican senate members, joined with 27 Democratic senate members.  The Independent senate members were split, one voting against and the other voting for the ammendment.  The remaining 29 Democrats voted against the ammendment, and 1 Democrat member didn’t vote at all.  The ammendment, named after the senate member who introduced it, Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker, Republican.

Amtrak, if it doesn’t comply with the Wicker ammendment, would lose out on earmarked funds.  “Americans should not have their Second Amendment rights restricted for any reason, particularly if they choose to travel on America’s federally subsidized rail line,” Mr. Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, said in the statement.  Before the tragedy of September 11th, Amtrak previously allowed passengers to carry on their licensed guns onto their trains, but the policy was stopped because of the tragedy of September 11th.  Those that opposed the ammendment argued that that Amtrak doesn’t have a system in place, such as the guidelines already enforced by the airline industry.  However, if Amtrak had a policy of allowing licensed guns in the recent past, before September 11, 2001, the argument of not having an existing system in place seems like a distorted and misplaced argument.  Another argument they have used is the easy accessibility to the baggage car area.  Well, if they simply make it harder to access then the problem is fixed.

Sunstein Cloture

Cass Sunstein has been nominated for the job of Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget.  On September 9, 2009, the Senate invoked cloture on his nomination, by a vote of 63 to 35.  The votes were divided pretty much across party lines, with all of the Democrats voting yay, plus 6 Republicans, to make the total of 63 yay.  The nay votes were comprised of 35 Republican votes.

Nudging you in the near future

Nudging you in the near future

The required majority to pass the cloture was 3/5, which was achieved by the Democrats seeking to pass the cloture.  One aspect that 2nd Ammendment supporters question is the fact that Mr. Sunstein does not believe in hunting and actually is in favor of an outright ban, because of his beliefs in animal rights.  Mr. Sunstein was even quoted saying, “we might ban hunting altogether, at least if it’s sole purpose is human recreation”.  Another suggestion that Mr. Sunstein has been credited with is the idea of “nudges”.  “Nudges” would be a type of disclaimer that would detail all of the possible horrible consequences that could result from the bad decision making skills of an individual.  To “nudge” the individual in the direction of a good “logical” decision, a credit card company, would have to disclose and detail all of the possible adverse consequences that might result in opening credit card accounts in the first place.  Another example of a “nudge” would be to a potential car buyer.  A regular car would have to disclose all of the possible gas costs that an individual might incur.  Nice to know that our Senate is “nudging” our country in the right direction.

Commemorating our Nation’s tragedy

September 11, 2001 is a day that Americans, along with other people’s of the world, mourned.  Those people who are above the age of kindergartners, have the memory of the airplanes crashing into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City forever etched into their minds.  The difference between the world view of an average American before the tragedy of September 11th is completely different from that of an American after September 11th came to pass.  Before September 11th, people laughed at the mere thought of arriving 2 hours before the arrival of one’s airplane flight.  After September 11th, travellers learned that arriving 2 hours before the appointed flight time of one’s trip may not be time enough.  Perhaps 3 hours would be better idea, so one would not have to rush about too much.

We will never forget 9/11/01

We will never forget 9/11/01

In the good old days before September 11th, the thought of taking one’s shoes off in order to clear security sounded like some kind of joke that only a comedian could conjure up.  Now, after the days of September 11th, travellers who know what to expect use sandals, specifically flip flops, in order to pass security successfully and efficiently.  For those who remember the United States before September 11th, memories of travelling on public transit without worrying about abandoned bags come to mind.  Trucks carrying large cargo on a bridge were not objects of suspicion back during the times before September 11th.  How quickly the times have changed, but Americans have fared quite well.  And those of us who lived through it will never forget that fateful day.

Serving up more victims

Seeing that we have a President who belongs to the Democratic Party, and a House of Representatives controlled by Democrats, let’s look at how their party views guns.  For the most part, Democrats believe that the 2nd ammendment is obsolete, since we are no longer under threat of a maniacal government.  So, because the Democrats believe we have no one who we might need to defend ourselves against, the need for firearms is reduced to being a non-existent need.  Non-existent needs don’t need to be protected by a constitutional ammendment, so in their minds’ eye, there is absolutely no need for anyone, save a law officer, to even think about needing a firearm.

Gun control

Gun control

Now let’s fast forward to the real world, where regular people live.  In the real world, when rapists have guns and the victims do not, the victim is doubly victimized.  By the rapist who is violating the rights of the victim, and the legislators who believe that the victim does not have rights worth defending.  In that particular scenario, how is the world view that the Democrats boast about remotely helpful to the victim of rape, who is not allowed to secure a firearm, in order to prevent being victimized in the first place?  In other words, how did gun control legislation help the victim in this situation?  Did gun control prevent the victim from being violated?  No?  Do perpetrators found with gun get longer sentences?  Possibly, but not always.  So how does gun control benefit our society?  That is a question that only Democrats can defend.

Up in arms?

Early on in the school day, Monday, August 24, 2009, at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, CA, a city in northern CA, about 20 miles away from San Francisco, a bomb exploded.  No students or teachers were hurt, and the perpetrator, a former student was subsequently apprehended.  So where is the unrest and protests about the weapons of choice that the student was attempting to harm others with?  Why are there no people going on record about how much they want to make illegal ingredients that comprise pipe bombs, swords or chainsaws?

Pipe bombs at HHS

Pipe bombs at HHS

Whenever something that looks like a firearm is even thought of being the weapon of choice for the disturbed, homicide minded perpetrator, you can count on many different experts and talking heads lamenting the existence and how obsolete the 2nd ammendment really is.  However, when pipe bombs and bladed instruments that are clearly weapons with the ability to maim and kill are found at the scene of a crime, or potential scene of a crime, no experts and talking heads are to be found.

That sure is might strange, when the object of the bomber is killing as many people as possible, without having to look or aim at the people intended for death.  The mainstream media is obviously biased against firearms that unfortunately, in the hands of the desolate, desparate and disturbed, is often a tragic combination.  But as the NRA always has reported, people kill.  A person intent on killing will do that with whatever instrument, not just guns.  But don’t count on the media telling you that.

Israel’s armed school guards

In the wake of Columbine High School’s 10th anniversary of the tragedy that took young lives, let’s look at how another high profile country treats insurgent behavior.  Here in the United States, the state of mind of the perpetrator is always a factor.  In Israel, often times they refer to violent acts perpetrated against innocent individuals as acts of terrorism.  Their view actually makes sense.  People who are doing insane harmful things for the benefit of perceived fame and attention are terrorizing their victims.

Israel against the terrorists

Israel against the terrorists

Therefore the people doing the violent acts are terrorists and by definition, terrorists do not deserve shows featuring countless psychoanalysts explaining their feelings.  Terrorists go in with the intention of victimizing a group for the sole purpose of getting attention for their cause, and because of their twisted logic, many actually believe they are heroes or martyrs willing to die for their cause.  Authorities in Israel have figured out their game, and actually have armed security in many of their public institutions, including schools.  Of course, even if armed security is present in all of the institutions, the die hard terrorists will still attack, but the result is less casualties.

If the United States treated those who attacked any of our public institutions, all educational institutions included, the attention seeking “go out in a blaze of glory” bunch might be deterred, and only the die hard terrorist would remain.  Lives could be saved by the mere act of showing the supposed psychopaths that consequences will be given.  But in this country, people believe that guns alone are the enemy, not the person with the evil intention.

Violence begets violence

One of the arguments that the liberals like to use frequently is that the prevalence of firearms causes violence.  Let’s phrase their argument this way, “without firearms, our country would be a better, peaceful place”.  Now, just for argument’s sake, let’s make up a law against firearms to insure our peaceful happy lives.  We’ll call the law, “firearm free zone”.

Gun Control

Gun Control

We won’t allow firearms to be shown on television or any other kind of media.  Let’s say this social experiment continued for a 25 year period.  What might the results be?  Well, let’s look at states with the strictest gun control laws that have been on the books for a while.  Washington, DC, has banned guns since 1977, and everybody who’s ever read a news story knows that it is notorious for being a violent city.  Chicago, IL, has banned guns since 1982.  Chicago is another city that is constantly highlighted on national news for being a city that is not very safe, to say the least.  California has had very strict gun laws since 1975.

Aside from stories about the antics of the Hollywood crowd, there isn’t a shortage of cities in California that are riddled with violence.  Since the 1990s, Maryland has had many anti-firearms laws on the books, and yet it is a state that has no shortage of violent news coverage.  New York has had handgun registration laws since the early 1900s.  New York is constantly in the news for stories involving violence.  As we can clearly see, the argument is not based in reality.

Blair Holt Bill

In February 2009, the House of Representatives introduced the Blair Holt bill, also known as HR 45.  Among some of the proposals within this bill are:  testing before being able to obtain a firearm, being required by the federal authorities to notify them of a move, since you have bought a firearm, being subject to visits by the federal authorities to verify that the firearm is secured in the presence of children and last, but definitely not least, is the proposal of testing, to be determined by the federal authorities, during the 5 year period of licensing.  And those are just the salient facts that come from reading the bill.  After a thorough, line by line reading, you can be sure that there is more to be found, or rather, less rights to bear arms.

2nd ammendment as we remembered it

2nd ammendment as we remembered it

If the proposal of this bill doesn’t clearly show the direction that our new Presidential administration wants to direct the country to, then your optimism regarding the 2nd ammendment is to be commended or envied.  If you are skeptical or cynical, at best, of President Obama’s approach to eroding the 2nd ammendment right to bear arms, then, unfortunately, welcome to the “Hope and Change” you believed in to vote for him as the President.  With a virtually filibuster proof Democratic Congress, and newly confirmed SCOTUS pick Sonia Sotomayor, 2nd ammendment rights which were during times past were deemed, “constitutional”, can now be construed as “abstract”.  Let’s hope that rational reason and thought win abstract thinking during these tough times.
